Where can I store excess baggage before my Kilimanjaro hike? You can leave suitcases and other items that you do not need on the mountain at your hotel in Moshi while you are climbing Kilimanjaro.
Only take the luggage you need for the trek. Your main mountain duffel is carried by the porter, while your remaining travel luggage stays at the hotel until you return from the climb.
Can I leave my suitcase at the hotel during the climb?
Yes. You do not need to take your full travel suitcase onto Kilimanjaro. It can remain at your hotel while you are on the mountain.
This is useful if you are travelling in Tanzania before or after your climb, or if you have clothing and equipment that you will not need during the trek.
What luggage do I take onto Kilimanjaro?
You normally take two bags onto the mountain:
- A main duffel bag containing your sleeping bag, spare clothing and other camp items. This is carried by your porter.
- A daypack containing the items you need while hiking, such as water, rain gear, warm layers, snacks and personal medication.
Everything else can remain with your stored luggage at the hotel.
Should I lock my stored luggage?
We recommend using a lockable suitcase or travel bag for any luggage that you leave behind during the climb.
Clearly label your luggage with your name so that it is easy to identify when you return from the mountain.
What should I do with passports, cash and valuables?
Important valuables such as passports, cash and expensive electronics should not simply be left loose inside stored luggage.
Ask the hotel about secure storage or a safe for high-value items that you do not want to take onto the mountain.
When do I get my stored baggage back?
Your stored luggage will be available again when you return to your hotel after completing your Kilimanjaro climb.
You can then repack for your onward journey, safari or flight home.
