How to travel to Mt Kilimanjaro

Travel to Mt Kilimanjaro airport (code JRO) is the best airport to fly to. Our hikes up the mountain depart from Moshi town. You can request to start from Arusha town but we charge an extra fee. Moshi town is located about 45′ minutes drive from the airport. We can arrange transfers from the airport to your hotel in Moshi on request. Please note that we will charge an extra fee to arrange the service.

It is possible that direct flights to Kilimanjaro airport are unavailable. You can then book flights to Nairobi, Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar airport instead. This will require booking connecting flights for the start of your hike. If you book connecting flights, please make sure there is enough time in between the flights. If flights are booked too close to each other, you might miss the connection or your luggage may not make it onto the same flight.

Travel to Mt Kilimanjaro airport –  Flights

We start all our hikes from Moshi town (or Arusha town) which is about 45km from Kilimanjaro airport. It is possible to travel to Mt Kilimanjaro airport via Dar Es Salaam, Zanzibar or Nairobi. Moshi town is much closer to Nairobi than Dar es Salaam. There are more road transfer options available between Moshi town and Nairobi. Less road transfer options are available between Moshi town and Dar es Salaam.

Bus transfers

We can assist to arrange private or shuttle bus transfers to Moshi or Arusha from Nairobi, and vice versa. 

The shuttle bus normally depart from the Parkside hotel in Nairobi. We can pick you up from select hotels in Nairobi city center or Nairobi airport at no additional cost. We can arrange pick-up or drop-off at most hotels in Moshi town’s city center.

Private transfers

It is possible to arrange private transfers when you travel to Mt Kilimanjaro, Moshi from Nairobi, Dar Es Salaam and vice versa. Please note that we will charge an additional fee for this service. We can pick you up from select hotels in Nairobi city center or the airport at no extra cost.

Kenya visa and Yellow fever vaccination

Please note that if flying to Nairobi airport before you travel to Mt Kilimanjaro, you may incur extra cost. If you leave the transit area of Nairobi airport, you will need to get a Kenya visa.

Additionally, Kenya is a yellow fever-endemic area. A  vaccination will be needed if:

  • You stay at Nairobi airport for 12 hours or longer and / or
  • You exit the transit area of the airport building 

You must show your vaccination card when entering Tanzania.

However your transit at Nairobi airport is less than 12 hours and you do not leave the transit hall, no vaccination will be needed.

If you will travel to Mt Kilimanjaro airport via Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam will the following apply.

  • You will only need a visa for Tanzania
  • You will only need a Yellow fever vaccination card if you are travelling to Tanzania via a Yellow fever endemic country. 

This will reduce your traveling cost, since no Kenya visa or vaccination will be required.

Nairobi airport normally offer more flight options to Kilimanjaro airport.
