Climbing Kilimanjaro Machame route, one of Kilimanjaro’s most popular and successful routes. Also known as the “Whiskey” route, it offer beautiful views and a moderate challenge. It is one of the most successful routes, because of its good acclimatization profile. More than a third of all hikers hiking the mountain choose this route. Because it is not a technical hike, it is suitable for beginner to experienced hikers.
About the Machame route
The hike begins at the Machame Gate, located at mountain’s southern base. On day 1, you hike through Montane rainforest, where rain can make the steep trail slippery. As you hike toward the Shira Plateau, the forest give way to low brush in the heather zone.
The route then ascends high to Lava Tower, before dropping to the Barranco camp. From there you head to Barafu camp on the southern circuit, circling below the South Icefield. Along the way you will enjoy stunning views as make your halfway around the mountain.
The long, tough climb to the summit begins from the east. Winding up with endless switchbacks over loose gravel, until you reach Stella Point on the crater rim. From there it is relatively flat for another hour to Uhuru Peak – the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. The descent then follows the Mweka trail.

Why choose the Kilimanjaro Machame route
The key to the success of the climbing Kilimanjaro Machame route is its favourable topography. It allow hikers to climb high and sleep low, for better acclimatisation. The summit trail is also slightly shorter and less strenuous than the route from Kibo hut. There are fewer loose scree sections, making the final push to the crater rim somewhat easier.
Downside to climbing Kilimanjaro Machame route
More than a third of all Kilimanjaro hikers choose this route. Unfortunately this is a busy trail up the mountain. The popularity arises from its remarkable success rate. The second drawback is the Barranco wall. The Barranco wall is a steep on the southern slope of the mountain. It can be a problem for hikers with a high fear of heights. The trickiest part is a step around a rocky outcrop. Rest assured your guide will support you every step of the way. Every year, thousands of hikers safely head up the wall, including porters who carry heavy loads with ease.
