Kilimanjaro Day Hikes
Kilimanjaro Day Hike
Experience Mount Kilimanjaro Without a Summit Climb
Explore Mount Kilimanjaro in a single day with a guided hike on the Shira Plateau, Marangu, Lemosho or Rongai route. Experience the mountain's forests, open landscapes and changing scenery without committing to a multi-day summit climb.
A Different Way to Experience Kilimanjaro
Experience Mount Kilimanjaro in One Day
A Kilimanjaro day hike lets you explore part of Africa's highest mountain without joining a multi-day summit climb. It is an ideal option if you have limited time in Moshi, want to experience the mountain before or after another trip, or simply prefer a shorter hiking adventure.
Mount Kilimanjaro covers a vast area, and its lower slopes, forests and high-altitude landscapes can be explored on several different day-hike routes. Each option offers a different side of the mountain, from dense rainforest to the wide open scenery of the Shira Plateau.
Our Kilimanjaro day hikes are guided mountain experiences rather than shortened summit climbs. You hike for the day, explore a specific section of Kilimanjaro National Park, and return without spending the night on the mountain.
You can choose from the Shira Plateau, Marangu Route, Lemosho Route or Rongai Route. The best option depends on how much hiking you want to do and whether you prefer forest, open mountain scenery or a higher-altitude experience.

Recommended Day Hike
Western Kilimanjaro
Shira Plateau Day Hike
The Shira Plateau day hike is a rewarding way to experience Kilimanjaro's higher-altitude landscape without joining a multi-day climb. After driving onto the western side of the mountain, you begin your hike above much of the rainforest and explore the open heather and moorland of the Shira area.
What the Day Looks Like
Depart Moshi in the morning and drive to Londorossi Gate for park registration. From there, continue by 4x4 to the Morrum Barrier, where the hike begins. Walk through upper heather and moorland towards the Shira Plateau, enjoy a picnic lunch on the mountain, then return along the same trail before driving back to Moshi.
- Excellent option if you want open mountain scenery rather than a full day in the rainforest
- Shorter trekking time than some of the other Kilimanjaro day-hike options
- Reaches a higher starting altitude and gives you a very different perspective of Kilimanjaro
Marangu Route
Marangu Route Day Hike to Mandara Hut
The Marangu day hike is a fuller walking day through Kilimanjaro's lush rainforest. Follow the well-established Marangu trail to Mandara Hut and, if time and weather allow, visit nearby Maundi Crater before descending to the park gate.
What the Day Looks Like
Depart Moshi for Marangu Gate, where you complete park registration before beginning the hike. The trail climbs steadily through dense rainforest towards Mandara Hut. Enjoy a picnic lunch along the route or at the hut, depending on your pace. If conditions and time allow, continue to Maundi Crater before returning through the forest to Marangu Gate and driving back to Moshi.
- A longer hiking day for visitors who want more time walking on Kilimanjaro
- Walk through the mountain's lush rainforest ecosystem to Mandara Hut
- Possible side visit to Maundi Crater when time and weather conditions permit

Quieter Sides of Kilimanjaro
Lemosho & Rongai Day Hikes

Western Kilimanjaro
Lemosho Route
Lemosho Day Hike to Mti Mkubwa
Hike through the lush rainforest on Kilimanjaro's western side towards Mti Mkubwa, also known as Big Tree Camp. This is a good choice if you want a forest-focused hiking experience on one of Kilimanjaro's quieter routes.
What the Day Looks Like
Travel from Moshi to Lemosho Gate and complete park registration before beginning the hike. Follow the forest trail gradually uphill towards Mti Mkubwa, where you stop for a picnic lunch before returning along the same route and driving back to Moshi.
- Dense and scenic Kilimanjaro rainforest
- Quieter western approach to the mountain
- Visit the first camp used on multi-day Lemosho climbs
Northern Kilimanjaro
Rongai Route
Rongai Day Hike to Simba Cave
Explore Kilimanjaro from the quieter northern side, following a gradual trail through montane forest towards the Simba Cave area. On clearer days, the route can also offer views towards the plains of northern Tanzania and Kenya.
What the Day Looks Like
Drive from Moshi to Rongai Gate on Kilimanjaro's northern side. After registration, hike gradually through montane forest towards Simba Cave Camp near the First Cave. Enjoy a picnic lunch near the turnaround point before descending to the gate and returning to Moshi.
- Experience the quieter northern side of Kilimanjaro
- Gentle initial trail through montane forest
- Possible views towards the Kenyan plains in clear weather
