Machame Route Itinerary
Follow the 7 Day Machame Route itinerary from Machame Gate through rainforest, Shira Plateau, Lava Tower and Barranco Wall to Barafu Camp, Uhuru Peak and the final descent to Mweka Gate.
7 Day Machame Route Itinerary – Why We Recommend It
The 7 Day Machame Route itinerary is our recommended option because the extra day gives your body more time to acclimatise and provides a better-paced approach to summit night than the shorter 6-day itinerary.
The Machame Route starts at Machame Gate on Kilimanjaro’s southern slopes and climbs through rainforest to the Shira Plateau. One of the most important acclimatisation stages is the hike to Lava Tower, where you reach approximately 4,600 m before descending to sleep lower at Barranco Camp. On the 7-day Machame Route, the journey from Barranco to Barafu is split over two days, with an overnight stop at Karanga Camp. This gives you more time to acclimatise and rest before the summit attempt.
Seven days on the Machame Route provide more time for altitude adaptation than the shorter 6-day itinerary.
Reach approximately 4,600 m at Lava Tower before descending to sleep lower at Barranco Camp.
The 7-day itinerary includes an overnight at Karanga Camp instead of continuing directly from Barranco to Barafu in one day.
A shorter hiking day to Barafu gives you time to eat, rest and prepare before the midnight summit attempt.

The first four days of the Machame Route itinerary take you from dense rainforest to the Shira Plateau, up to Lava Tower for an important acclimatisation hike, and across the Barranco Wall to Karanga Camp.
Day 1
7 Day Machame Route · Day 1
Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Habitat: Montane rainforest
After breakfast in Moshi, you drive for about an hour to Machame Gate on Kilimanjaro’s southern slopes. Your guide completes the National Park registration while the mountain crew prepares the equipment and porter loads.
The trek begins beneath a dense rainforest canopy. The trail climbs steadily through lush vegetation and can become muddy and slippery after rain, so trekking poles and waterproof footwear are useful.
You arrive at Machame Camp in the late afternoon, where the crew will have prepared your tent and evening meal. Temperatures drop noticeably after sunset as you settle into your first night on Kilimanjaro.
Day 2
Machame Route itinerary · Day 2
Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Habitat: Moorland
After breakfast, leave Machame Camp and climb steeply for about an hour as the rainforest gradually gives way to heather and moorland. The trail becomes rockier and the views begin to open across the mountain.
Continue at a slow, steady pace before climbing the rocky Shira Ridge. Reaching the Shira Plateau reveals a much broader volcanic landscape, with views toward Kibo when the weather is clear.
The Machame trail joins the Lemosho and Shira routes in this area before you continue to Shira Camp for your second night on the mountain.
Day 3
Machame Route Itinerary · Day 3
Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
Habitat: Semi-desert
Day 3 is one of the most important acclimatisation days on the 7-day Machame Route. From Shira Camp, you climb gradually into increasingly barren terrain toward Lava Tower at approximately 4,600 metres.
You normally stop near Lava Tower for lunch before descending to Barranco Camp at about 3,900 metres. Although you sleep only slightly higher than the previous night, your body has been exposed to a much greater altitude during the day.
This is the classic climb high, sleep low principle and one of the reasons Machame offers a strong acclimatisation profile. Barranco Camp sits beneath the dramatic Barranco Wall with views toward Kilimanjaro’s southern glaciers.
Day 4
Machame Route · Day 4
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Habitat: Semi-desert
The morning begins with the famous Barranco Wall, a steep rocky ridge rising about 257 metres above the valley. From below it can look intimidating, but it is not a technical climb and no specialist climbing equipment is required.
Your guides help you through short scrambling sections before you reach the top of the wall. In clear conditions, this is one of the best viewpoints on the Southern Circuit, with dramatic scenery beneath the glaciers.
From the Barranco Wall, continue across a series of ridges and valleys before descending into Karanga Valley and making the final climb to Karanga Camp. On our recommended 7-day Machame Route itinerary, you overnight at Karanga instead of continuing directly to Barafu Camp, giving you additional time to acclimatise and rest.
Halfway Through the 7-Day Machame Route
From Karanga Camp, the Machame Route itinerary continues to Barafu Camp for summit preparation before the midnight climb toward Uhuru Peak.
Barafu Camp, Summit Night and the Final Descent
The final three days of the 7 Day Machame Route take you from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp, through the overnight summit attempt to Uhuru Peak, and finally down through the rainforest to Mweka Gate.
Day 5
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
After breakfast, you leave Karanga Camp and make a steady ascent across increasingly barren alpine desert toward Barafu Camp. Vegetation becomes sparse and the landscape is dominated by rock, scree and views of Kilimanjaro’s upper slopes.
The relatively short hiking day is deliberate. Arriving at Barafu early gives you time to eat, organise your summit clothing and equipment, hydrate and rest before the overnight summit attempt.
Your guide conducts a final health check, explains the summit plan and confirms what you should carry. Most climbers try to sleep for a few hours before waking late in the evening to prepare for summit night.
Day 6
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp
You wake at around 23:00 and prepare for the most demanding stage of the Machame Route itinerary. The summit attempt normally begins around midnight, with the group moving slowly upward over volcanic scree in the darkness.
The climb to Stella Point at 5,756 metres is usually the toughest part of summit night. From Stella Point, you continue around the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa.
After photographs and a short time at the summit, you descend back to Barafu Camp for food and a short rest. You then continue downward to Mweka Camp, making this the longest and most physically demanding day of the 7-day Machame Route.
Day 7
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Enjoy your final breakfast on the mountain before beginning the descent through Kilimanjaro’s rainforest. The trail can be wet and slippery, particularly after rain, so trekking poles remain useful even on the final day.
At Mweka Gate, you complete the National Park sign-out formalities and collect your summit certificate if you reached Stella Point or Uhuru Peak. Your vehicle then transfers you back to your hotel in Moshi for a shower, celebration and well-earned rest.
Your 7 Day Machame Route is now complete, covering approximately 61 km (38 miles) from Machame Gate to Uhuru Peak and down to Mweka Gate.
What to Expect on Machame Summit Night
Summit night is the most demanding part of the 7-day Machame Route itinerary. You climb for several hours in darkness, cold temperatures and thin air before reaching Stella Point and continuing to Uhuru Peak. The pace is intentionally slow, and patience, hydration, warm clothing and following your guide’s instructions are essential.
6-Day vs 7-Day Machame Route
Both itineraries follow the same Machame trail, but the 7-day version includes an overnight at Karanga Camp instead of continuing directly from Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp.
Which Machame itinerary should you choose?
We recommend the 7 Day Machame Route itinerary for most climbers. The additional night at Karanga Camp provides a better-paced approach to Barafu, gives your body more time to acclimatise and reduces the amount of hiking required on the day before summit night. The 6-day version remains available for experienced hikers with limited time, but we do not recommend choosing it simply to save one day.
How the Machame Route Crosses Kilimanjaro
The Machame Route itinerary begins at Machame Gate on the southern side of Kilimanjaro. The trail climbs through rainforest to Machame Camp before reaching the Shira Plateau and joining the Southern Circuit toward Lava Tower.
From Lava Tower, the route descends to Barranco Camp before continuing over the Barranco Wall, through Karanga Valley and on to Barafu Camp. Summit night follows the trail to Stella Point and Uhuru Peak, while the descent follows the separate Mweka Route.
