What should I carry in my Kilimanjaro daypack? Your Kilimanjaro daypack should contain the items you may need while hiking between camps, including water, rain gear, warm layers, snacks, sun protection and personal medication.

Your porter carries your main duffel bag, so you will normally not have access to it again until you reach the next camp.

What should I pack in my Kilimanjaro daypack?

Your daypack should contain only the things you may need during that day's hike. Typical items include:

  • Drinking water.
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers.
  • An extra fleece or warm layer.
  • Snacks and energy food.
  • Sunscreen and SPF lip balm.
  • Sunglasses and a sun hat.
  • Warm hat and gloves when needed.
  • Personal medication.
  • Basic blister treatment.
  • Phone or camera.
  • Small personal items such as hand sanitiser and tissues.

What size daypack is best for Kilimanjaro?

A Kilimanjaro daypack of around 25–35 litres is usually suitable. It should be large enough for your water, waterproof clothing and extra layers without encouraging you to carry unnecessary weight.

A pack in this size range is normally enough for a full hiking day while still being comfortable to carry for several hours.

What should I look for in a Kilimanjaro daypack?

Comfort is more important than choosing a particular brand. A good daypack for Kilimanjaro should ideally have:

  • Comfortable, adjustable shoulder straps.
  • A supportive hip belt.
  • Enough space for water and extra clothing.
  • Easy-access pockets for small items.
  • Compatibility with a hydration bladder if you use one.
  • A rain cover or waterproof inner liner.
  • A fit that feels comfortable when fully loaded.
Test your daypack before the climb: Use the same pack during your training hikes and carry a similar amount of weight. This gives you time to adjust the straps and make sure the pack remains comfortable over longer distances.

How much water should I carry in my daypack?

Your guide will advise you how much water to carry for each day's hike. Your daypack needs enough space for your drinking water as well as the clothing and personal items you may need before reaching the next camp.

Many hikers use a combination of reusable water bottles and a hydration bladder.

What stays in my porter-carried duffel?

Items that you do not need while hiking should stay in your main duffel bag. This normally includes your sleeping bag, spare clothing, toiletries and other camp items.

Your porter carries this bag between camps, and you generally only have access to it once you arrive at your overnight camp.

Do I have to carry my own daypack on Kilimanjaro?

Yes. Hikers normally carry their own daypacks while the mountain crew transports the larger duffel bags and expedition equipment.

If you need help carrying your daypack, an additional personal porter can be arranged. This should preferably be organised before the climb.

Pack for the day ahead: Weather and temperatures can change considerably on Kilimanjaro. Before leaving camp, make sure your daypack contains the layers and rain protection you may need before reaching the next campsite.
