Kilimanjaro National Park requires climbers to hike with an authorised guide through a licensed operator. This applies even if you are an experienced trekker or mountaineer.

TANAPA advises that all Kilimanjaro climbs must be guided and that hikers should remain with their climbing party rather than ascending or descending alone.
Why is a guide required on Kilimanjaro?
Kilimanjaro is a high-altitude mountain where weather, terrain and health conditions can change quickly. Guides help manage the climb safely and make decisions if a hiker becomes unwell.
Guides also help with route navigation, pace, acclimatization, park rules and communication with the mountain crew.
Can an experienced hiker climb Kilimanjaro without a guide?
No. Previous trekking or mountaineering experience does not remove the requirement to climb with an authorised guide.
Even experienced hikers must follow Kilimanjaro National Park regulations and climb through an approved operator.
Can I travel to Kilimanjaro alone?
Yes. You can absolutely travel to Tanzania by yourself and still climb Kilimanjaro.
