Training for Kilimanjaro is very important when preparing for this once in a life time trip. Being physically prepared increases your chances of reaching the summit. Your success in summiting, largely depends on your physical endurance and mental determination. By training you will increase your performance during the hike and make it more enjoyable. It will also increase your mental confidence and strength.
How fit do you have to be?
When training for Kilimanjaro, the type of fitness is more important than the degree of fitness. Since this will be a hike, the best training involves hiking. If possible hike under similar conditions to those that you will encounter on the mountain. While running can be good, it will not prepare your muscles for a strenuous six-day hike. We recommend that you do regular walking in your training program. We also recommend gym training to increase muscle development. Going on a local 1 or 2 day hiking trial, is a very good and enjoyable way to train. When training for Kilimanjaro you must go for regular walks and make sure that they include uphill and down hills sections. When you go walking, wear your hiking boots and carry your daypack to simulate the conditions that you will encounter on the hike.
